Using branches of trees as media to call spirits of nature and ancestors is Shinto ritual. Offering flowers in front of grave stones or inside special alters (in our houses) to console spirits of our ancestors is Buddhist custom.

Two different ways of life merged and sublimated into art work “Tatehana”. It is the origin of Ikebana.

During the Muromachi period when beautiful interior design style called “Tokonoma (alcove)” was established, branches of trees and flowers started playing different role: flower offering transformed into flower display.
