Hana-mochi / 花餅

December 18, 2019

Time flies! New year 2020 is coming soon.

Since you seldom see flowers during winter, people especially lived among mountains created “Hana-Mochi” (literally means flowers & rice cake. Some people call it “Mochi-Hana”) to see red & white flowers made of mochi were blooming. Hana-Mochi is seasonal icon to celebrated happy new year. Like colors of Japan’s flag, combination of red and white is auspicious colors in Japan.

Because the flowers are made of rice, displaying Hana-Mochi also means to make a wish good harvest in coming year.
